The difference between success and failure is determination if you are determined to be somebody and achieve your life goals you must fail and then succeed. Logan and Oech both describe their success through their failures and through these failures along came determination. It wasn’t the redness in the iodine that he thought solved the knocking problem but it was the additives in the iodine that solved it. ![]() He succeeded with the red iodine to get rid of the knock in the automobile industry of 1912. Oech’s story about Charles Ketterling explains how you will not succeed the first time you must keep trying until it works. Although his success didn’t come easy there were challenges he pushed through those challenges and succeeded. Logan had to grow up and become independent because he was on his own. He realized that in college you don’t have your professors and parents to make sure you stay motivated and do your work. The success he experienced was returning to college and getting serious about his studies instead of following the popular crowd. Logan experienced success even after his embarrassing failure. Success is portrayed in both Oech and Logan’s essays they express how they succeeded even after the failure and even most people can relate to these essays. Both Oech and Logan’s stories give the reader their experiences with not only failure but how they succeeded after the failure. He says she is so prone to believing failure is bad that she doesn’t understand that she must fail in order to succeed. He says that she is reluctant to trying new approaches because of the fear of failure. On the other hand Oech tells a story about his friend who had recently graduated from college with a journalism master’s degree and hasn’t been able to find a job in the field. Logan experienced both failure and success as he says he went from a zero to a 4.0 grade point average (Logan 98). Logan’s failure was a wake-up call because he became embarrassed by his failure and decided to get serious and return to college. Logan’s experience with failure made him flunk out of both high school and college where he was forced to get a minimum wage job. Oech and Logan can be compared because they both express their experiences with failure and success. Oech says that you will not be a success until you have failed at least once because success and failure come from the same process. Oech on the other hand says, most people consider success and failure opposites, but they are actually both products of the same process (Oech 87). Logan’s failure was focusing on being a popular social success instead of being a school scholar because education wasn’t important to him at the time. ![]() Logan says, Instead my focus was on following the crowd and being a social success (Logan 99). Although, failure and success may be achieving a life’s goal and also not working to achieve that goal you must be willing to fail in order to succeed and reach that goal. In Paul Logan’s “Zero” and Roger Von Oech’s “To err is wrong” they both describe success and failure very thoroughly. Most people may think of failure as failing a class or failing out of school and some may say success is achieving something in life or in all areas of life. Success and failure will and can never necessarily be defined because almost every person has their own personal definition of what success and failure mean to them.
